Trinidad & Tobago becomes the first Caribbean nation to adopt UPI
In a significant breakthrough, Trinidad and Tobago has become the first Caribbean country to adopt Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s flagship digital payment platform. This milestone achievement was made possible during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day official visit to the Caribbean nation, where he held talks with Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.
The adoption of UPI marks a significant step forward in the digital payment landscape of Trinidad and Tobago, enabling citizens to make seamless and secure transactions using their mobile devices. UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is a real-time payment system that allows users to send and receive money using a unique identifier, such as a phone number, Aadhaar number, or virtual payment address.
The agreement to adopt UPI was signed between the NPCI and the Trinidad and Tobago-based payment service provider, First Citizens Bank. With this partnership, First Citizens Bank will now offer UPI services to its customers, enabling them to make transactions with merchants and banks in India and other countries that have adopted UPI.
The adoption of UPI by Trinidad and Tobago is a significant development in the digital payment space, as it marks the first instance of a Caribbean country embracing India’s flagship payment platform. The move is expected to facilitate greater economic cooperation between the two nations and promote financial inclusion in Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition to the adoption of UPI, the two countries also agreed to explore further collaboration in the implementation of India Stack solutions, including DigiLocker, e-Sign, and Government e-Marketplace (GeM). These solutions are designed to promote digital governance, enhance transparency, and reduce paperwork.
