Raja Khas in Indora to be first solar power village of Himachal
Himachal Pradesh, known for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is taking a significant step towards sustainable development by making Raja Khas village in Indora of Kangra district the first fully solar power village of the state. This ambitious project aims to reduce the village’s carbon footprint and contribute to the state’s goal of becoming a leader in renewable energy.
Located at a distance of 70-km from Dharamsala, Raja Khas village spans a total geographical area of 675.37 hectares, making it a significant hub for solar power generation. According to the 2011 Census, the village had a population of 2,201 persons, but the present population is estimated to be around 3,000 persons. Despite the growing population, the village is committed to adopting sustainable practices and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
The solar power project in Raja Khas is a result of the collaborative efforts of the state government, the local administration, and the solar power industry. The project involves the installation of solar panels on rooftops, solar farms, and other structures, which will generate electricity for the village. The solar power will be used to power homes, schools, and other essential infrastructure, reducing the village’s reliance on grid electricity.
The benefits of the solar power project are numerous. Firstly, it will reduce the village’s carbon footprint and contribute to the state’s efforts to combat climate change. Secondly, it will provide a reliable source of energy, reducing the risk of power outages and ensuring that essential services such as healthcare and education are not disrupted. Thirdly, the project will create employment opportunities in the solar power sector, contributing to the local economy.
The project is being implemented by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) in collaboration with the Department of Energy and the Department of Rural Development. The HPSEB has identified Raja Khas as the first village to be powered entirely by solar energy, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
The success of the Raja Khas project will pave the way for similar initiatives in other villages across the state. Himachal Pradesh has set a target of generating 4,000 MW of solar power by 2030, and the Raja Khas project is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
In addition to the economic and environmental benefits, the solar power project is also expected to have a positive impact on the local community. The project will provide clean and reliable energy, improving the overall quality of life for the residents of Raja Khas. The project will also create opportunities for local artisans and craftspeople to showcase their skills and products, promoting local entrepreneurship and tourism.
The Raja Khas solar power project is a shining example of what can be achieved when government, industry, and community come together to achieve a common goal. It is a testament to the state’s commitment to sustainable development and its determination to become a leader in renewable energy.
