I’d Love to See Verstappen & Russell Team Up at Mercedes: Button
The world of Formula One is always abuzz with speculation and rumors about driver transfers and team lineups. The latest buzz has surrounded the possibility of Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen joining forces with George Russell at Mercedes. And, surprisingly, it’s not just any F1 fan who thinks this would be an exciting development – it’s a former F1 champion himself, Jenson Button.
In a recent interview, Button expressed his desire to see Verstappen and Russell team up at Mercedes. While acknowledging that it would be a significant challenge for Verstappen to adapt to a new car and team, Button believes that the potential benefits would be worth it.
“Max is doing an incredible job at Red Bull, and it would be challenging for him to leave that behind,” Button said. “But if he did go to Mercedes, it would be a different thing altogether. The car isn’t going to be designed around him, and he would have to adapt to a new team, a new car, and a new way of working.”
So, what would prompt Button to think that this partnership would be a good one? For one, he believes that Verstappen’s aggressive driving style would complement Russell’s more measured approach. “Max is a very aggressive driver, and he takes risks,” Button explained. “George is a bit more cautious, and he’s very good at managing his tires and managing his speed. If they were to work together, they would bring out the best in each other.”
Another reason why Button thinks this partnership would work is that both Verstappen and Russell have shown themselves to be quick and talented drivers. Verstappen, of course, has been a dominant force in F1 for several years now, and Russell has impressed with his performances for Williams and Mercedes. “Both of them are very quick, and they both have a lot of natural ability,” Button said. “If they were to work together, they would push each other to be even better.”
Of course, there are also some practical considerations that would need to be taken into account if Verstappen were to join Mercedes. For one, Red Bull would need to find a replacement for their star driver, and it’s not clear who that would be. In addition, there would need to be significant changes to the Mercedes car to accommodate Verstappen’s driving style and preferences.
Despite these challenges, Button believes that the potential benefits of this partnership would make it worth pursuing. “It would be a big change for Max, but it would also be a great opportunity for him to learn and grow as a driver,” he said. “And who knows, it could also be a great opportunity for George to learn from Max and become an even more well-rounded driver.”
As the 2023 F1 season approaches, all eyes will be on the driver market and the potential for big changes at top teams like Mercedes. While it’s impossible to predict with certainty which drivers will end up where, one thing is clear – if Verstappen and Russell were to team up at Mercedes, it would be a major coup for the team and a huge boost to the sport as a whole.
