Suspected Fertiliser Plant Emissions Spark Health Crisis in Ennore
The Ennore region in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is facing a fresh health crisis as grey, ash-like dust has been settling on homes over the past several weeks. The dust, suspected to be emissions from the newly operated fertiliser unit of Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited, has sparked concerns among residents about the potential health risks it poses.
The South First team visited the area and found that the air quality was severely polluted, with levels of particulate matter (PM) exceeding the safe limits. The PM levels in the area were found to be as high as 400 micrograms per cubic meter, which is more than four times the safe limit set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Residents of Ennore have been complaining of respiratory problems, skin irritation, and other health issues due to the poor air quality. Many have also reported experiencing headaches, eye and nose irritation, and other symptoms. The situation has become so dire that residents are forced to stay indoors, unable to venture out due to the hazardous air quality.
“We can’t even go out to buy groceries or take our children to school. The air is so thick with dust that it’s hard to breathe,” said a resident of Ennore. “We’re living in fear, wondering when the authorities will take action to stop this pollution.”
The suspected fertiliser plant emissions are not only a health risk but also a potential environmental disaster. The grey dust has been found to be settling on crops and plants, potentially affecting the local ecosystem. The pollution has also affected the nearby Ennore Lake, which is a vital source of drinking water for the residents.
Experts say that the high levels of pollution in the area pose serious health risks, including respiratory problems, heart disease, and even cancer. “The pollution in Ennore is a serious concern, and residents are at risk of developing long-term health problems if the situation is not addressed,” said Dr. R. Suresh, a local doctor.
The authorities have been accused of ignoring the concerns of the residents, and many are demanding action to be taken to stop the pollution. “We’ve been raising this issue with the authorities for months, but nothing has been done. It’s like they’re not listening to us,” said a local resident.
The Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited has been accused of not complying with environmental regulations, and the authorities have been forced to issue several notices to the company. However, the company has failed to take adequate measures to reduce the pollution.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has launched an investigation into the matter and has issued a notice to the Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited to stop the emissions immediately. However, the company has been given a deadline of several weeks to comply, which has left many residents feeling frustrated and concerned.
The situation in Ennore highlights the need for stricter environmental regulations and enforcement. The government must take immediate action to address the pollution crisis in the area and ensure that industries comply with environmental regulations.
Residents of Ennore are demanding justice and are urging the authorities to take immediate action to stop the pollution. They are also demanding compensation for the health problems they have suffered due to the pollution.
The situation in Ennore is a wake-up call for the government and the public to recognize the importance of environmental protection. It is essential that we prioritize the health and well-being of our citizens and take immediate action to address the pollution crisis.
