Kerala CM writes to PM, urges him to save Indian nurse in Yemen
In a desperate bid to save a Kerala-born nurse, Nimisha Priya, who is facing the death penalty in Yemen, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his urgent intervention in the matter.
Nimisha Priya, a 27-year-old nurse from Kerala, was arrested and convicted of killing a Yemeni national in 2018. She was subsequently sentenced to death, sparking widespread outrage and concern among her family, friends, and the people of Kerala.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Vijayan urged Modi to take immediate action to secure Nimisha’s release and ensure her safe return to India. The Kerala CM emphasized that the state government stands firmly with all those working towards Nimisha’s exoneration and safe return.
“This is a matter of grave concern for us, and we are deeply disturbed by the news of Nimisha’s conviction and sentence,” Vijayan wrote in his letter. “As the Chief Minister of Kerala, it is my duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens, and I request you to take immediate action to intervene in this matter and secure Nimisha’s release.”
Vijayan’s letter to Modi comes amidst growing concerns over Nimisha’s safety and well-being in the Yemeni prison. The Kerala government has been actively engaging with the Indian embassy in Yemen and other authorities to secure Nimisha’s release, but so far, there has been no breakthrough.
Nimisha’s family has been fighting for her release for years, and their efforts have been supported by the Kerala government and various human rights organizations. The family has alleged that Nimisha was falsely accused and that the trial was unfair.
The Kerala government’s decision to write to the Prime Minister is seen as a significant step in the efforts to secure Nimisha’s release. Vijayan’s letter highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for urgent intervention to prevent a grave injustice.
“This is not just a matter of one individual’s life; it is a matter of upholding the principles of justice and fairness,” Vijayan wrote. “I request you to take immediate action to secure Nimisha’s release and ensure her safe return to India.”
The case of Nimisha Priya has sparked widespread outrage and concern in Kerala and across the country. Many have taken to social media to express their outrage and demand that the government take immediate action to secure her release.
The Kerala government’s decision to write to the Prime Minister has also been welcomed by human rights organizations, which have been advocating for Nimisha’s release for years.
“We appreciate the Kerala government’s efforts to secure Nimisha’s release,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International India. “The Indian government must take immediate action to intervene in this matter and ensure Nimisha’s safe return to India.”
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the Prime Minister will take immediate action to secure Nimisha’s release. However, one thing is clear: the people of Kerala and the Indian government must do everything in their power to ensure that this grave injustice is rectified and Nimisha Priya is reunited with her family and friends.
