J&K’s Only AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Booked for Threatening, Abusing Woman Doctor
Jammu and Kashmir’s only Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Mehraj Malik, has found himself in the eye of a storm after being booked for allegedly threatening a woman doctor. The doctor, who works at a government medical college in Doda, has accused Malik of making “abusive, gendered and derogatory remarks” against her online.
According to the police complaint filed by the doctor, Malik made the threatening remarks on social media, threatening to “drag her and strip her naked”. The doctor, who has chosen to remain anonymous, alleged that Malik’s actions were meant to intimidate and silence her.
The police have taken cognizance of the complaint and have booked Malik under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those related to criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a woman, and using obscene language. Malik’s arrest is still pending, pending the outcome of further investigations.
The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation across the state, with many calling for Malik’s immediate suspension and arrest. The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has also demanded Malik’s resignation, saying that his actions have “brought shame to the institution of democracy”.
The woman doctor’s complaint alleges that Malik made the threatening remarks after she shared a post on social media criticizing the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The doctor claimed that Malik had been making similar remarks against her online for several days, but it was only when she shared her concerns about the pandemic that he took it upon himself to threaten her.
The doctor’s complaint also alleges that Malik had been making personal attacks on her, calling her names and making derogatory comments about her profession. The doctor said that she had tried to ignore his comments, but Malik’s behavior had become increasingly aggressive and threatening.
The incident has raised serious questions about the kind of language and behavior that is acceptable from public figures, particularly those in positions of power and authority. As an elected representative, Malik has a responsibility to uphold the dignity and respect of his office, and his actions have fallen far short of that standard.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have assured the public that they are taking the complaint seriously and are investigating the matter thoroughly. The police have also promised to take strict action against Malik if he is found guilty of the allegations.
The incident has also sparked a wider debate about the kind of language and behavior that is tolerated online. Social media platforms have been criticized for not doing enough to prevent the spread of hate speech and harassment, and many are calling for greater accountability and regulation.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what action will be taken against Malik. However, one thing is clear: the incident has brought shame to the institution of democracy and has highlighted the need for greater accountability and respect from public figures.
