100% Smells of Revenge: Amarinder Warring on FIR against Bajwa
The political landscape of Punjab has witnessed yet another dramatic turn, with the filing of an FIR against Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa. Reacting to the development, Punjab Congress President and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has termed the entire episode as “100% smells of revenge”. According to Warring, the FIR against Bajwa was the wish of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
As reported by Hindustan Times, Warring made these comments while speaking to the media on the sidelines of a function in Ludhiana. The FIR was filed based on a complaint lodged by a local resident, who alleged that Bajwa had made false statements about the number of bombs that had entered the state.
Bajwa had earlier sparked a controversy by claiming that 50 bombs had entered the state, of which 18 had been used. The Akali Dal and the BJP had taken umbrage with his statement, calling it “baseless” and “false”. The Shiromani Akali Dal had also demanded an FIR against Bajwa, alleging that he had made the statement to gain political mileage.
Warring’s comments have added fuel to the fire, with the Congress leader accusing the Chief Minister of being behind the FIR. “It’s a clear case of revenge politics. The CM wants to weaken the opposition and silence Bajwa,” Warring said.
The FIR against Bajwa has been filed under sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. The complainant has alleged that Bajwa’s statement had caused harm to his reputation and had also spread false information.
Warring’s remarks have been seen as a strong rebuke to the Chief Minister, with many interpreting his statement as a sign of the Congress party’s growing unease with the AAP government’s tactics. The FIR against Bajwa has been seen as a move to intimidate and silence the opposition, rather than a genuine effort to investigate the allegations.
The controversy has also highlighted the growing political tensions in Punjab, with the Congress and the AAP locked in a bitter battle for power. The AAP had come to power in the state with a promise to end corruption and bring transparency to governance. However, its actions have been criticized by the opposition, which has accused it of being arbitrary and vindictive.
The FIR against Bajwa has also sparked concerns about the erosion of democratic values in Punjab. The opposition has accused the government of using its powers to muzzle dissent and silence criticism. The Congress has demanded an apology from the Chief Minister and has threatened to take legal action if the FIR is not withdrawn.
As the political temperature in Punjab continues to rise, it remains to be seen how the FIR against Bajwa will play out. Will the opposition be able to challenge the government’s actions, or will the AAP be able to silence its critics? One thing is certain, however – the political landscape of Punjab is set to remain volatile in the coming weeks and months.
