Protests Erupt Against Tata-Owned Zudio Over Alleged Israel Ties
In recent days, a growing wave of protests has swept across India, targeting Tata Group’s fashion retail brand Zudio. The protests, led by Indian People in Solidarity with Palestine (IPSP), have been sparked by allegations that Tata has ties with Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Demonstrators have gathered outside Zudio outlets in several major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Chandigarh, Rohtak, Vijayawada, and Kozhikode, demanding that the company sever its alleged ties with Israel.
The protests, which have been ongoing for two days, have been characterized by a mix of peaceful demonstrations and confrontations with police. On Wednesday, a group of protesters in Delhi attempted to block a Zudio outlet, leading to a scuffle with police. In Mumbai, protesters chanted slogans and waved Palestinian flags outside a Zudio store.
The IPSP, a coalition of left-wing and civil society groups, claims that Tata’s alleged ties with Israel are a violation of international law and a betrayal of the values of peace and human rights. “Tata Group’s partnership with Israel is a affront to our values of non-violence and human rights,” said IPSP spokesperson, Rizwan Khan. “We demand that Tata Group immediately cut ties with Israel and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza.”
The protests have been met with a mixture of support and criticism. While some have praised the protesters for standing up against alleged human rights abuses, others have criticized the protests as anti-Semitic and divisive. “These protests are a misguided attempt to score political points,” said Ramesh Menon, a member of the BJP’s youth wing. “Tata Group is a respected Indian company with a long history of promoting peace and reconciliation. These allegations are baseless and slanderous.”
However, the IPSP and other protest organizers maintain that their actions are justified and necessary. “We are not anti-Semitic, we are anti-apartheid,” said IPSP spokesperson, Rizwan Khan. “We are standing up against the oppression of the Palestinian people and demanding that Tata Group take action to end its complicity in these human rights abuses.”
The controversy surrounding Zudio’s alleged ties with Israel has been simmering for several weeks. In May, a report by the Indian news website, News Click, alleged that Tata had partnered with an Israeli firm to supply military equipment to the Israeli army. The report was met with widespread outrage and calls for Tata to sever its ties with Israel.
However, Tata has denied any wrongdoing and has claimed that the allegations are baseless and unfounded. “Tata Group is committed to promoting peace and reconciliation in the region,” said a spokesperson for the company. “We deny any involvement in the Israeli military and are committed to upholding the highest standards of ethics and integrity in all our business dealings.”
Despite Tata’s denials, the protests continue to gain momentum. On Thursday, a group of protesters in Visakhapatnam attempted to block a Zudio outlet, leading to a confrontation with police. In Chandigarh, protesters chanted slogans and waved Palestinian flags outside a Zudio store.
As the protests continue to spread across India, it is clear that the controversy surrounding Zudio’s alleged ties with Israel is not going away anytime soon. The IPSP and other protest organizers remain committed to their cause, demanding that Tata Group take action to end its alleged complicity in human rights abuses in Gaza.
“Tata Group must take responsibility for its actions and end its ties with Israel,” said IPSP spokesperson, Rizwan Khan. “We will continue to protest until our demands are met and justice is served.”
