Mufti Alleges Foul Play After OGW Jumps in J&K River, Drowns; BJP Slams Her
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across Jammu and Kashmir, an overground worker (OGW) jumped into a river in Kulgam district and drowned, allegedly after being picked up by the Army two days ago. The incident has sparked a heated debate, with former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti alleging foul play and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slamming her remarks.
According to reports, the OGW, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken into custody by the Army on Tuesday. However, he managed to escape and jumped into the river, where he drowned. The incident has raised questions about the treatment of civilians at the hands of the security forces.
Mehbooba Mufti, who was the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2015 to 2018, took to social media to express her concerns over the incident. She alleged that the locals had informed her that the OGW was picked up by the Army two days ago, suggesting that he may have been subjected to torture or harassment, leading to his ultimate decision to take his own life.
“Very disturbing news from Kulgam. Locals tell me that the OGW who drowned in the river was picked up by the Army 2 days ago. It’s not the first time such incidents have happened. When will we learn to respect human life?” Mufti tweeted.
Her remarks were met with strong criticism from the BJP, which accused her of making baseless allegations. Sanju Verma, a BJP leader, took to social media to slam Mufti, saying, “Mehbooba, after the Pahalgam terror attack, said, ‘Why blame Pakistan?'” Now, she is trying to divert attention by making baseless allegations against the Army.”
The Pahalgam terror attack, which took place in August 2019, was carried out by terrorists and left 15 people dead. Mufti’s statement at the time had sparked controversy, with many accusing her of downplaying the role of Pakistan in the attack.
The incident has once again highlighted the tense situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where the security forces are engaged in a fierce battle against terrorism. The region has been under lockdown since August 2019, when the Centre revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to the state.
The incident has also raised questions about the treatment of civilians at the hands of the security forces. Human rights organizations have long accused the forces of human rights abuses, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings.
The Army, on its part, has denied any involvement in the incident. In a statement, the Army said, “The allegations made by Mehbooba Mufti are baseless and unfortunate. We will not comment on the personal tweets of individuals.”
The incident is a stark reminder of the volatile situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where the security forces are engaged in a fierce battle against terrorism. The region needs peace and stability to prosper, and such incidents can only hinder the efforts to achieve that.
As the investigation into the incident continues, it is essential that the truth comes out and those responsible are held accountable. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve nothing but the truth, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure that justice is served.
