Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for 14 States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert, issuing a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warning in 14 states and union territories across the country. The warning is in place for the next two days, with severe weather conditions expected to hit several regions.
According to the IMD, it is “very likely” that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will occur over several states, including Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Kerala, West Bengal, and Sikkim on Wednesday and Thursday. Additionally, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura can also expect heavy rainfall on Wednesday, while Gujarat will experience heavy rainfall on Thursday.
The warning has been issued as a low-pressure system is moving across the country, bringing with it a mass of moisture-laden air that is expected to lead to heavy rainfall in several regions. The IMD has classified the rainfall as “heavy” if it exceeds 64.5 mm in a 24-hour period, and as “extremely heavy” if it exceeds 115.5 mm in the same time frame.
The affected states and union territories are:
- Karnataka
- Goa
- Maharashtra
- Assam
- Meghalaya
- Bihar
- Kerala
- West Bengal
- Sikkim
- Nagaland
- Manipur
- Mizoram
- Tripura
- Gujarat
The IMD has also warned of strong winds, hail, and thunderstorms accompanying the heavy rainfall, which can cause damage to crops, infrastructure, and disrupt daily life.
The warning comes as the Indian summer has been unusually hot and dry in many parts of the country, with temperatures soaring to record highs in some areas. The heavy rainfall is expected to provide much-needed relief to parched regions, but it also poses a risk of flooding, landslides, and other hazards.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. This includes staying indoors during heavy rainfall, avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary, and keeping a watchful eye on local news and weather updates.
The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary. In the meantime, citizens are urged to take all necessary precautions to stay safe during the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
