Heavy Rain & Gusty Winds Hit Mumbai, IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Mumbai, the financial capital of India, experienced a sudden downpour of heavy rain and gusty winds on Tuesday, catching many by surprise. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the city.
As the day began, residents of Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies and dusty winds blowing through the city. By mid-morning, the rain started to pour down, causing traffic congestion and disruptions in daily commute. Areas like Dahisar, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Bandra, Kurla, and Powai witnessed heavy to moderate rainfall, leaving many residents scrambling for umbrellas and raincoats.
The heavy rain and gusty winds continued throughout the day, making it difficult for people to venture out of their homes. Many residents took to social media to share their experiences and photos of the rain-soaked city. “Mumbai’s pre-monsoon rain is here! Heavy rain and gusty winds making it a rough commute,” tweeted @MumbaiRains.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Yellow alert is the second-highest warning level, indicating that the weather conditions are likely to cause significant disruptions to daily life. The forecast also predicted strong winds and lightning storms, which could lead to power outages and property damage.
The sudden rain and wind spell has also affected the city’s transportation system. Many buses and autos were stuck in traffic due to waterlogged roads, while train services were delayed by several hours. The Mumbai Suburban Railway, which carries millions of commuters every day, was also affected by the rain.
While some residents welcomed the much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat, others were inconvenienced by the sudden change in weather. “I was planning to attend a meeting today, but the rain and wind have ruined my plans. It’s difficult to navigate the city in this weather,” said Rohan Desai, a local resident.
The heavy rain and gusty winds have also caused some damage to property and infrastructure. Several trees were uprooted, and power lines were snapped, leaving many areas in the dark. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up emergency teams to handle the situation and restore essential services.
In a statement, the IMD said, “A low-pressure area has formed over the Arabian Sea, which will bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Mumbai and surrounding areas.” The forecast also predicted that the rain would continue for the next two days, with a slight respite on Wednesday.
As the city struggles to cope with the sudden rain and wind spell, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. With the IMD issuing a yellow alert, it’s essential to stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary steps to protect oneself and one’s property.
