Ex-Union Minister & Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Passes Away
India has bid farewell to another prominent leader, as Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, the former Union Minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89. Dhindsa was receiving treatment for age-related issues at a private clinic in Punjab’s Mohali when he breathed his last.
Dhindsa’s remarkable journey in politics spanned over several decades. Born in 1935, he started his political career in the 1960s and went on to become a prominent figure in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He held various positions within the party, including that of the party’s secretary and president.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation, Dhindsa was bestowed with India’s third-highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2019. However, in a bold move, he returned the award in December 2020, amidst the ongoing farmers’ protests. His decision to return the award was seen as a show of support for the protesting farmers, who were demanding reforms in the agricultural sector.
Throughout his political career, Dhindsa was known for his strong opinions and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. He was a vocal critic of the government and fought tirelessly for the rights of farmers, workers, and the marginalized sections of society.
Dhindsa’s entry into national politics began in 1977, when he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time. He went on to represent the Bathinda constituency in the Lok Sabha for several terms, earning a reputation as a dedicated and hardworking parliamentarian.
In addition to his work in parliament, Dhindsa also held several ministerial positions in the Union government. His tenure as the Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries was particularly notable, as he worked to revitalize the steel industry and promote economic growth.
Dhindsa’s passing away has sent shockwaves throughout the country, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum. His colleagues and fellow politicians have remembered him as a dedicated leader who fought tirelessly for the rights of the people.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal described Dhindsa as a “dedicated and selfless leader” who worked for the betterment of society throughout his life. “He was a true patriot and a champion of the common man,” Badal added.
The Punjab government has declared a three-day state mourning in honour of Dhindsa, during which national flags will be flown at half-mast.
As the nation mourns the loss of this remarkable leader, it is a reminder of the importance of public service and the impact that individuals can have on the lives of others. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa may be gone, but his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate future generations of leaders.
