Ex-Union Minister & Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passes away
It is with immense sadness that we report the passing away of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a veteran politician and former Union Minister, at the age of 89. Dhindsa breathed his last at a private clinic in Mohali, Punjab on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and unwavering commitment to his community.
Dhindsa was a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and had served as a Union Minister in the Indian government. He was known for his strong convictions and unwavering dedication to his principles, which earned him both accolades and criticism throughout his career.
Born in 1933, Dhindsa had a long and illustrious career in politics, spanning over five decades. He began his political journey in the 1960s and quickly rose through the ranks of the Shiromani Akali Dal, becoming one of the party’s most prominent leaders.
Dhindsa’s political career was marked by several significant milestones. He served as the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution from 1998 to 2004, during which he played a key role in implementing several policies aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
One of his most notable achievements was the introduction of the Public Distribution System (PDS), which aimed to provide subsidized foodgrains to the poor and vulnerable sections of society. Dhindsa’s efforts in this regard earned him widespread recognition and admiration, and he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, in 2019.
However, Dhindsa’s political career was not without controversy. In December 2020, he returned his Padma Bhushan award in solidarity with the farmers who were protesting against the Centre’s agricultural reforms. This move was seen as a bold statement against the government, and it earned him both praise and criticism from various quarters.
Despite his passing, Dhindsa’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of politicians and citizens. His commitment to public service and his unwavering dedication to his principles are a testament to the power of true leadership.
Dhindsa is survived by his family, including his wife, son, and daughter. His passing away has sent shockwaves throughout the political fraternity, with leaders from across the spectrum paying tribute to his memory.
As we bid farewell to this iconic figure, we are reminded of the immense impact he had on the lives of millions of Indians. His passing away is a loss not just for his family and friends but for the entire nation, which has lost a true leader and a champion of the common man.
