Ex-Union Minister & Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passes away
It is with great sadness that we report the passing away of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a former Union Minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader, at the age of 89. Dhindsa breathed his last at a private clinic in Mohali, Punjab, on Wednesday, surrounded by his loved ones. He was reportedly undergoing treatment for age-related issues at the time of his death.

Dhindsa’s contributions to the field of politics and governance were recognized by the Government of India, which awarded him the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, in 2019. However, in a surprising move, Dhindsa returned the award in December 2020, amid the ongoing farmers’ protests against the Centre’s agricultural reforms. The decision was seen as a significant gesture of solidarity with the farmers, who were demanding that the government roll back the reforms.
Throughout his career, Dhindsa was known for his strong leadership skills and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was a respected figure in Punjab politics, with a reputation for being a strong advocate for the rights of farmers and the underprivileged.
Dhindsa’s entry into politics dates back to the 1980s, when he was first elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He went on to become a prominent figure in the Shiromani Akali Dal, serving as a Minister in the government of Punjab and later as a Union Minister.
In addition to his political career, Dhindsa was also a successful businessman and a philanthropist. He was involved in various social and charitable initiatives, including the establishment of schools and hospitals in rural Punjab.
Dhindsa’s passing away has sent shockwaves through the political circles of Punjab, with leaders from across the spectrum paying tribute to his life and legacy. His family, including his wife and children, are said to be deeply grieving his loss.
As news of Dhindsa’s passing away spread, social media was flooded with tributes and condolences from politicians, civil society leaders, and ordinary citizens. Many remembered Dhindsa for his strong advocacy for the farmers and his commitment to public service.
