
Ex-Union Minister & Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Passes Away
It is with immense sadness that we report the passing away of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, the former Union Minister and senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He breathed his last at the age of 89 at a private clinic in Punjab’s Mohali on Wednesday. Dhindsa was undergoing treatment for age-related issues before his untimely demise.
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was a prominent figure in Indian politics, having served as the Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, and later as the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries. He was known for his dedication to public service and his commitment to the welfare of the people.
Born in 1933, Dhindsa began his political career in the 1960s, when he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most influential leaders of the party. In 1980, he was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Bathinda constituency, a position he held until 1984.
In 1997, Dhindsa was appointed as the Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, a position he held until 1998. During his tenure, he implemented several significant reforms, including the introduction of the National Food Security Act. He also played a key role in the implementation of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) agreements, which helped to liberalize India’s trade policies.
In addition to his work in the government, Dhindsa was also a respected social worker. He was known for his work in promoting education and healthcare in rural areas, and was particularly committed to the welfare of women and children.
Dhindsa was also recognized for his contributions to the nation, having been awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, in 2019. However, he returned the award in December 2020, in solidarity with the farmers who were protesting against the Centre’s agricultural reforms.
