Ex-Union Minister & Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Passes Away
It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a stalwart of Indian politics, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who breathed his last at the age of 89 at a private clinic in Punjab’s Mohali on Wednesday. Dhindsa, a former Union Minister and a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was undergoing treatment for age-related issues.
Dhindsa’s illustrious career spanned several decades, and he played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of India. Born in 1933, Dhindsa started his political journey in the 1960s and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Throughout his career, Dhindsa held various positions, including that of Union Minister of Food and Civil Supplies from 1999 to 2002. During his tenure, he implemented several policies aimed at improving the lives of farmers and ensuring timely availability of food grains. His dedication to public service earned him the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2019, India’s third-highest civilian honour.
However, Dhindsa’s decision to return the Padma Bhushan award in December 2020 sent shockwaves across the country. He took this drastic step to express solidarity with the farmers who were protesting against the Centre’s farm laws. Dhindsa’s decision was seen as a symbol of his commitment to the cause of the common man and his willingness to stand up for what is right, even if it meant going against the grain.
Dhindsa’s passing away has left a void in the political landscape of Punjab and beyond. His colleagues and admirers are mourning the loss of a leader who was known for his simplicity, humility, and unwavering commitment to his ideals.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh paid tribute to Dhindsa, saying, “Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was a dedicated and committed leader who always stood by his principles. His return of the Padma Bhushan award was a testament to his conviction and commitment to the cause of the farmers.”
Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed his condolences, saying, “Dhindsa ji was a guiding light for our party and a respected leader in the state. His departure has left a huge void in our party and in the political landscape of Punjab.”
Dhindsa’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. He will be remembered as a leader who fought for the rights of the marginalized and the downtrodden. His selfless service to the nation and his commitment to his principles will forever be etched in the annals of Indian history.
As we bid farewell to Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, we take comfort in the knowledge that his contributions to the nation will not be forgotten. He may be gone, but his spirit will continue to inspire us to work towards creating a better tomorrow.
