Ex-Union Minister & Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passes away
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a former Union Minister and senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, at the age of 89. Dhindsa breathed his last at a private clinic in Mohali, Punjab, on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and commitment to the people of India.
Dhindsa was reportedly undergoing treatment for age-related issues at the time of his passing. His untimely demise has sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes pouring in from politicians, civil society leaders, and ordinary citizens alike.
A life of public service
Born on August 26, 1933, Dhindsa began his political career in the 1960s as a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the party’s most prominent leaders, known for his strong oratory skills and unwavering commitment to the Sikh community.
In 1992, Dhindsa was elected to the Rajya Sabha, where he served as a Member of Parliament for over two decades. During his tenure, he was a vocal advocate for the rights of the Sikh community, particularly with regard to issues of religious freedom and cultural preservation.
In 2017, Dhindsa was appointed as the Union Minister of Science and Technology in the Ministry of Earth Sciences by the Narendra Modi-led government. In this role, he worked extensively to promote scientific research and innovation in India, and was particularly passionate about the development of the country’s space program.
Awards and recognition
Dhindsa’s contributions to public life were recognized with several prestigious awards and honors. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, for his services to the country. However, in December 2020, Dhindsa returned the award in solidarity with the farmers’ protests that were taking place across the country at the time.
This decision was seen as a bold move by Dhindsa, who was already an elderly man at the time. It reflected his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and equality, and earned him widespread admiration and respect from the public.
Legacy and impact
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s passing leaves a significant void in Indian politics and public life. His commitment to the Sikh community and his tireless efforts to promote the rights of marginalized groups will be deeply missed.
However, Dhindsa’s legacy extends far beyond his political achievements. He was a true statesman who always put the interests of the country and its people above his own. His dedication to public service and his commitment to the principles of justice and equality are an inspiration to us all.
As we mourn the passing of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, we remember his many achievements and contributions to public life. We pay tribute to his unwavering commitment to the Sikh community and his tireless efforts to promote the rights of marginalized groups.
