Darkness at Kerala Tourism Spot Sparks Public Outcry, Safety Fears
Kerala, a state renowned for its natural beauty, temples, and rich cultural heritage, has been hit with a surprise setback in the form of a tourism spot plunged into darkness. The Tourism Destination Centre near Manikyamangalam Thura in Kerala has remained in the dark for over a week, leaving evening visitors disheartened and raising serious safety concerns.
The absence of functioning lights has forced many regulars, including families, walkers, and users of the open gym to stop visiting the once-bustling evening spot after sunset. The darkness has not only marred the aesthetic appeal of the spot but also poses a significant threat to the safety of visitors, especially women and children.
Located in Palakkad district, the Tourism Destination Centre was once a popular evening spot, attracting large crowds of families, young couples, and fitness enthusiasts. The centre offered a range of facilities, including walking tracks, open gyms, and children’s play areas, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and recreation after a long day. However, the sudden loss of lighting has rendered the spot unusable during the evenings, forcing visitors to seek alternative destinations.
The exact reason behind the power outage remains unclear, but sources indicate that the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been dragging its heels in resolving the issue. Despite repeated complaints from locals and visitors, the KSEB has not taken any concrete steps to restore power to the centre.
The darkness at the tourism spot has not only affected the local economy but also had a significant impact on the mental well-being of the visitors. Many have reported feeling anxious and uneasy while walking or exercising in the dark, which has led to a significant decline in footfall at the centre.
“I have been visiting this spot for years, and I have always felt safe and comfortable. But now, the darkness has made me hesitant to visit even during the day,” said a regular visitor, who wished to remain anonymous. “The absence of lights has created a sense of unease, and I fear for my safety, especially when I’m walking alone at night.”
The lack of lighting has also raised concerns about the security of the centre. With no illumination, it is difficult for authorities to monitor the area, making it an attractive spot for criminal activity.
“It’s unacceptable that a popular tourist spot like this has been left in the dark for so long,” said local resident, Ramesh Kumar. “The authorities need to take immediate action to restore power and ensure the safety of visitors. We cannot afford to compromise on the safety of our citizens, especially women and children.”
The Kerala Tourism Department has been accused of being slow in addressing the issue, and locals are demanding that the government takes immediate action to resolve the power outage.
“The Kerala Tourism Department needs to take responsibility for the safety and well-being of visitors,” said Palakkad MLA, Shafi Parambil. “We will raise this issue in the state assembly and ensure that the government takes concrete steps to resolve the power outage and restore the centre to its former glory.”
As the darkness at the Kerala tourism spot continues to spark public outcry, the people are left wondering when the authorities will take concrete action to resolve the issue. Until then, the once-bustling evening spot remains a shadow of its former self, a testament to the importance of prioritizing safety and security in public spaces.
