Ashu & 2 others resign as Congress loses Ludhiana West bypoll
The Punjab Congress party has suffered a significant blow with its candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, resigning as the Working President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) following the party’s loss in the Ludhiana West bypoll. Ashu, who was the party’s candidate for the bypoll, took responsibility for the loss and stepped down from his post, citing that he was unable to deliver the desired results.
Ashu was not alone in his decision to resign as two other senior leaders of the party, MLA Pargat Singh and former MLA Kushaldeep Singh (Kikki Dhillon), who are also vice presidents of the PPCC, have also resigned in solidarity with Ashu. The trio had campaigned extensively for the bypoll, and their resignation is seen as a major setback for the Congress party in the state.
The Ludhiana West bypoll was seen as a crucial contest for the Congress party, which was seeking to regain its lost ground in the state. However, the party’s candidate, Ashu, was defeated by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate, Hardeep Singh Mundian, by a margin of over 10,000 votes.
In a statement, Ashu said that he took responsibility for the party’s loss and did not want to continue in his role as the Working President of the PPCC. He also expressed his gratitude to the party’s leadership and workers for the support they had given him during the campaign.
Pargat Singh and Kikki Dhillon also resigning from their positions as vice presidents of the PPCC, saying that they could not continue to serve in their roles after the party’s poor performance in the bypoll. The decision to resign was taken after a meeting with the party’s leadership, during which they discussed the party’s performance in the bypoll and the need for changes in the party’s strategy.
The resignation of Ashu, Pargat Singh, and Kikki Dhillon is seen as a major blow to the Congress party in the state, which has been struggling to regain its lost ground in recent years. The party had won only two seats in the recent state assembly elections, and the loss in the Ludhiana West bypoll has further weakened its position.
The party’s leadership is likely to face criticism for the party’s poor performance in the bypoll, and the resignation of the three leaders may be seen as a major setback for the party. The party’s chances of winning the upcoming state assembly elections, which are due in 2023, have been significantly reduced following the loss in the bypoll.
In a statement, Punjab Congress chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu, said that the party would take a comprehensive review of its performance in the bypoll and would take necessary steps to improve its prospects in the upcoming state assembly elections. He also expressed his gratitude to Ashu, Pargat Singh, and Kikki Dhillon for their services to the party and wished them well in their future endeavors.
The resignation of Ashu, Pargat Singh, and Kikki Dhillon is a major development in the political landscape of Punjab, and it remains to be seen how the party will recover from this setback. The party’s leadership will need to take a hard look at its strategy and performance to ensure that it is able to compete effectively in the upcoming state assembly elections.
