Hrithik & Jr NTR’s ‘War 2’ is all style, no ammo
The much-awaited sequel to the 2019 blockbuster ‘War’ has finally arrived, with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR reuniting to bring back the high-octane action and thrill that fans loved in the first installment. ‘War 2’, directed by Ayan Mukerji, promises to be a spy thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But does it deliver? News18’s Titas Chowdhury gave the film 2.5 stars and reviewed it as “all style and no ammo”.
The review begins by acknowledging the film’s ambition, stating that it’s “good” but execution is where it falters. The story, unfortunately, is thin and lacks substance, leaving the audience feeling underwhelmed. Chowdhury writes, “The story is thin, not lean in a sleek way, but hollow in a ‘was there a draft two?'” This lack of depth in the narrative makes it difficult for the audience to connect with the characters and their motivations.
Despite this, the review praises the performances of the lead actors, particularly Hrithik and Jr NTR, who bring their A-game to the film. The two actors have undeniable chemistry on screen, and their action sequences are nothing short of spectacular. Chowdhury notes that the “fireworks are aplenty” in the film, but unfortunately, it’s not enough to salvage the overall lackluster experience.
The review also critiques the film’s pacing, stating that it’s uneven and suffers from a lack of tension. Chowdhury writes, “The plot is predictable, and the twists are few and far between. The climax, which had all the makings of a thrilling finale, ends up being a damp squib.” This slow-burning pace makes the film feel longer than its actual runtime, leaving the audience feeling restless and disconnected.
Despite these criticisms, Chowdhury concludes the review by acknowledging that ‘War 2’ is not a complete failure. She writes, “It’s not a bad film, but it’s not a great one either. It’s a middling effort that will leave you wondering what could have been.” The review ultimately concludes that the film’s “style is undeniable, but the ammo is lacking”.
Overall, ‘War 2’ seems to be a film that is high on style but low on substance. While the performances of the lead actors are commendable, the thin storyline and predictable plot make it a disappointing watch. If you’re a fan of action-packed spy thrillers, you might find some enjoyment in the film’s flashy action sequences and stylish visuals. However, if you’re looking for a thought-provoking and engaging narrative, you might want to look elsewhere.
