I’d Love to See Verstappen & Russell Team Up at Mercedes: Button
In an exciting revelation, former Formula One (F1) champion Jenson Button has expressed his desire to see Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen join forces with George Russell at Mercedes. The idea might seem intriguing, considering the current success of Verstappen with Red Bull, but Button believes that the change could bring about fresh dynamics and opportunities for both drivers.
Speaking to the media, Button emphasized that he would love to see Verstappen and Russell team up at Mercedes, citing the potential for a thrilling partnership. “I think it would be fantastic to see them together,” Button said. “Max is doing a great job with Red Bull, and George is doing a great job with Williams, but I think it would be a fantastic combination.”
Button’s suggestion is not entirely far-fetched, given the current state of the F1 grid. Both Verstappen and Russell have been making waves in their respective teams, with Verstappen’s impressive performances for Red Bull and Russell’s consistent results for Williams. The thought of these two talented drivers sharing a pit box at Mercedes is certainly tantalizing.
However, as Button noted, such a move would come with its challenges. Verstappen has grown accustomed to the Red Bull car, which has been designed and optimized around his driving style. At Mercedes, the situation would be reversed, with the car not being tailored to his specific needs.
“It’s a different thing altogether if Verstappen goes to Mercedes,” Button pointed out. “The car isn’t going to be designed around him, so he would have to adapt to a new car, a new team, and a new environment. That would be a challenge for him, but I think he’s capable of doing it.”
Verstappen has been enjoying a stellar season with Red Bull, claiming several podiums and pole positions. His partnership with Alex Albon has been particularly successful, with the duo working in tandem to push the team forward. While the thought of Verstappen leaving Red Bull might be unsettling for fans, Button believes that the possibility of him joining Mercedes is an exciting one.
“Max is a fantastic driver, and I think he would thrive in a Mercedes car,” Button said. “He’s got the speed, he’s got the ability, and he’s got the mental toughness to adapt to a new team and a new car. I think it would be a great combination.”
For Russell, the prospect of partnering Verstappen at Mercedes would be a significant step up in his F1 career. He has been making steady progress with Williams, but partnering with a driver of Verstappen’s caliber would give him the opportunity to learn from someone with a wealth of experience.
“George is a fantastic young driver, and I think he’s got a huge amount of potential,” Button said. “He’s been doing a great job at Williams, and I think partnering with Max would be a great opportunity for him to learn and grow as a driver. Max is a fantastic mentor, and I think he would be able to help George take his driving to the next level.”
While the possibility of Verstappen joining Mercedes is still a topic of speculation, Button’s endorsement of the idea is certainly encouraging. As the F1 season continues to unfold, fans will be eagerly watching to see how the grid shapes up, and whether we’ll see Verstappen and Russell teaming up at Mercedes in the future.
