Maruti, Hyundai & Tata sales fall, Mahindra & Toyota gain in June
The Indian auto industry has witnessed a mixed bag of sales performances in June, with some major players recording significant declines, while others reported growth. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors saw their sales decline year-on-year (YoY), whereas Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported increase in sales.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automaker, saw YoY sales decline across all segments except mid-size sedans. The company reported a 13% decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales, with a total of 1,33,051 units sold in June. The decline was largely attributed to the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which has affected the production of Maruti’s popular models such as the Alto, WagonR, and Swift.
Hyundai Motor India, another major player in the Indian auto market, recorded a 12% YoY decline in domestic dispatches. The company sold 43,000 units in June, down from 49,000 units in the same period last year. The decline was attributed to the company’s supply chain issues and the ongoing semiconductor shortage.
Tata Motors, the third-largest automaker in India, posted a 15% YoY drop in passenger vehicle sales. The company sold 24,345 units in June, down from 28,500 units in the same period last year. The decline was attributed to the company’s struggling sales of its Nexon compact SUV and the ongoing semiconductor shortage.
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer, saw a 18% YoY increase in utility vehicle sales. The company sold 23,500 units of its utility vehicles, including the XUV500, XUV300, and Bolero, in June. The increase was attributed to the company’s focus on its utility vehicle segment and the growing demand for SUVs in the Indian market.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Indian arm of Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation, reported a 5% YoY sales increase. The company sold 12,000 units in June, up from 11,500 units in the same period last year. The increase was attributed to the company’s growing demand for its popular models such as the Innova Crysta and Fortuner.
The decline in sales of Maruti, Hyundai, and Tata can be attributed to various factors, including the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which has affected the production of many models. Additionally, the increasing competition in the Indian auto market has led to a decline in sales for some manufacturers.
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra’s focus on its utility vehicle segment and Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s focus on its popular models have helped the companies to report growth in sales. The Indian auto market is expected to continue to be challenging in the coming months, with many manufacturers facing supply chain issues and declining sales.
