Maruti, Hyundai & Tata sales fall, Mahindra & Toyota gain in June
The Indian auto industry witnessed a mixed bag of sales performance in June, with some of the major players experiencing a decline, while others managed to buck the trend. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors saw a significant decline in their sales numbers, whereas Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported growth.
According to data released by the companies, Maruti Suzuki saw a YoY (year-on-year) sales decline across all segments except mid-size sedans. The company’s domestic passenger vehicle sales dropped by 13% to 1,04,067 units in June compared to the same period last year. Maruti Suzuki’s market share in the domestic passenger vehicle segment also decreased to 52.4% during the month.
Hyundai Motor India also recorded a 12% YoY decline in domestic dispatches in June, with sales dropping to 44,021 units. The company’s market share in the domestic passenger vehicle segment decreased to 17.4% during the month.
Tata Motors, another major player in the Indian auto market, posted a 15% YoY drop in passenger vehicle sales in June. The company’s domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 26,555 units in June, down from 31,244 units in the same period last year.
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra saw a significant growth in its sales numbers in June. The company’s utility vehicle sales increased by 18% YoY to 23,445 units, driven by strong demand for its popular models such as the XUV500 and the Scorpio.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor was another company that reported a growth in its sales numbers in June. The company’s domestic sales increased by 5% YoY to 12,138 units, driven by strong demand for its popular models such as the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner.
The decline in sales for Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors can be attributed to various factors such as the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which has led to production disruptions and reduced supplies. Additionally, the companies’ focus on meeting the BS-VI emission norms has also led to a decline in sales, as they have been prioritizing the production of BS-VI compliant vehicles over their BS-IV models.
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra’s growth in utility vehicle sales can be attributed to the growing demand for SUVs in the Indian market. The company’s focus on expanding its portfolio of SUVs, including the recently launched XUV300, has also helped it to gain market share in the segment.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s growth in sales can be attributed to its strong portfolio of SUVs and MPVs, which have been in high demand in the Indian market. The company’s focus on providing a wide range of fuel options, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid variants, has also helped it to attract a wider customer base.
In conclusion, while Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors saw a decline in their sales numbers in June, Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported growth. The Indian auto industry is expected to continue its growth trajectory in the coming months, driven by factors such as government incentives for electric vehicles and the growing demand for SUVs.
