Maruti, Hyundai & Tata sales fall, Mahindra & Toyota gain in June
The Indian automotive industry has been going through a tumultuous period in recent times. The sales figures for June 2022 have revealed that two of the country’s largest car manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India, have seen a significant decline in their sales. On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor have reported an increase in their sales.
According to the latest data, Maruti Suzuki, which is India’s largest car manufacturer, saw a 13% year-on-year (YoY) decline in its domestic passenger vehicle sales. This decline was seen across all segments except mid-size sedans, which saw a 2% YoY increase. The company’s total sales in June stood at 1,23,781 units, which is a significant drop from the 1,41,551 units sold in the same period last year.
Hyundai Motor India, which is the second-largest car manufacturer in the country, also saw a decline in its sales. The company recorded a 12% YoY decline in its domestic dispatches, with total sales standing at 41,401 units in June. This is a significant drop from the 46,901 units sold in the same period last year.
Tata Motors, which is another major player in the Indian automotive industry, also saw a decline in its sales. The company’s passenger vehicle sales dropped by 15% YoY, with total sales standing at 23,835 units in June. This is a significant decline from the 28,091 units sold in the same period last year.
However, not all car manufacturers in India saw a decline in their sales. Mahindra & Mahindra, which is a leading utility vehicle manufacturer, saw an 18% YoY increase in its utility vehicle sales. The company’s total sales in June stood at 35,745 units, which is a significant increase from the 30,344 units sold in the same period last year.

The company reported a 5% YoY sales increase, with total sales standing at 16,555 units in June. This is a significant improvement from the 15,760 units sold in the same period last year.
The decline in sales of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors can be attributed to several factors. One of the main reasons is the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which has affected the production of cars in India. Additionally, the rise in fuel prices and the increasing competition in the market have also had an impact on the sales of these companies.
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra’s increase in sales can be attributed to its strong lineup of utility vehicles, which include the XUV500, XUV300, and Bolero. The company’s utility vehicles have been popular among Indian customers, and their sales have been consistent over the past few years.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s increase in sales can be attributed to its strong brand reputation and the popularity of its vehicles in India. The company’s Innova Crysta and Fortuner are among the most popular vehicles in the country, and their sales have been consistent over the past few years.
In conclusion, the sales figures for June 2022 have revealed that Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors saw a decline in their sales, while Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor saw an increase. The decline in sales of these companies can be attributed to several factors, including the ongoing semiconductor shortage and the rise in fuel prices.
