Migrant Worker Dies in Stone Crusher Accident in Kolar
Tragedy struck a small village near Kshetranahalli in Karnataka’s Kolar district when a 35-year-old migrant worker lost his life in a devastating workplace accident. Nanda Lal, a labourer from West Bengal, was employed at Aishwarya Crusher, a stone crushing unit in the area. The accident occurred when Lal was caught in the machinery, resulting in grievous injuries that proved fatal.
Initial reports indicate that Lal suffered severe injuries after being trapped in the stone crusher machine. Despite the efforts of locals and emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with friends and family of the deceased left to grapple with the devastating loss.
The accident occurred at around 10:30 am on a typical workday morning. Lal, a migrant worker who had come to Karnataka in search of better opportunities, was reportedly working at the stone crushing unit when the accident occurred. According to eyewitnesses, the machine malfunctioned, causing the stone crusher to jam and trapping Lal’s body.
“It was a horrific scene,” said a local resident, who witnessed the accident. “We saw Nanda Lal’s body being pulled out of the machine, and he was in a state of severe distress. We immediately called the police and ambulance, but it was too late. He passed away on the spot.”
The Kolar police and local authorities were quick to respond to the distress call. A team of police officers and medical personnel rushed to the scene, where they found Lal’s body trapped in the machinery. Despite attempts to revive him, Lal was pronounced dead at the spot.
The police have launched an investigation into the accident, with officials stating that they will be conducting a detailed inquiry to determine the cause of the malfunction. “We have registered a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the incident,” said a police officer.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and dangers that many migrant workers face while working in various industries across the country. Karnataka, in particular, has seen a surge in accidents and fatalities in recent years, with many cases involving migrant workers.
The state government has been criticized for its lack of effective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of migrant workers in the state. Many experts argue that the government’s inadequate response to these incidents has contributed to the tragic outcomes.
In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of migrant workers losing their lives in workplace accidents in Karnataka. In 2020, a devastating fire at a shoe factory in Bengaluru killed 15 migrant workers from West Bengal. Last year, a group of migrant workers died in a road accident while traveling to their workplace in Belagavi.
The Kolar accident has once again highlighted the need for greater attention and action from the government to ensure the safety and welfare of migrant workers. As the investigation into the incident continues, it is imperative that the authorities take concrete steps to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased worker is struggling to come to terms with the loss. Lal’s relatives have expressed their shock and grief at the sudden loss of their loved one, who had been working hard to provide for his family back in West Bengal.
“We are still trying to come to terms with the news,” said Lal’s brother, who was in constant touch with his brother. “Nanda was a hardworking man who had come to Karnataka in search of a better life. We are devastated by his loss and demand justice for his death.”
As the news of the accident spreads, many are calling for greater attention to the plight of migrant workers in Karnataka. It is imperative that the government takes concrete steps to address the safety concerns and welfare of these workers, who are the backbone of the state’s economy.
