Ex-Union Minister & Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Passes Away
It is with a sense of sadness that we report the passing away of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, the former Union Minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader. He breathed his last at the age of 89 at a private clinic in Punjab’s Mohali on Wednesday. Dhindsa had been undergoing treatment for age-related issues before his demise.
Dhindsa’s Political Journey
Born on November 23, 1935, Dhindsa began his political career in the 1960s as a young leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent figure in the party. In 1980, he was elected as the Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, a position he held for two consecutive terms.
In 1997, Dhindsa was elected as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, serving under Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. He held this position until 2002. During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping the state’s politics and governance.
Federal Politics
In 2004, Dhindsa joined the Union Cabinet as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence. He held this position until 2009. During his tenure, he was involved in several initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s defence capabilities.
In 2014, Dhindsa was appointed as the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology. He held this position until 2019.
Awards and Recognition
Dhindsa was awarded India’s third-highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2019. However, he returned the award in December 2020, in solidarity with the farmers who were protesting against the Centre’s agricultural laws.
Farmers’ Protests
Dhindsa’s decision to return the Padma Bhushan was seen as a significant gesture of support for the farmers. He had been a vocal critic of the Centre’s agricultural laws, which he believed would harm the interests of Punjab’s farmers.
In a statement, Dhindsa had said, “I have decided to return the award as I cannot keep it when the farmers are fighting for their rights. I am proud to be a part of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which has always stood for the rights of the farmers.”
Legacy
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s passing away is a significant loss for the Shiromani Akali Dal and the people of Punjab. He was a dedicated leader who spent his entire life serving the people of the state. His contributions to Punjab’s politics and governance will always be remembered.
In a statement, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “Dhindsa was a dedicated leader who had always put the interests of the people of Punjab first. His passing away is a great loss for the party and the state.”
Dhindsa is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. His funeral procession will take place on Friday, with a state funeral being held in his honour.
