Shashi Tharoor shares 4 reasons why Trump’s ceasefire post on India & Pak was ‘disappointing’
In a scathing tweet, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called out US President Donald Trump’s recent post on a ceasefire between India and Pakistan as “disappointing” and has shared four reasons why it is so. Trump’s tweet, which sparked a flurry of reactions across the globe, read: “India and Pakistan have been trying to negotiate a ceasefire along the Line of Control for many years. It has been a long-standing issue, and I am hopeful that the two countries will be able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement.”
However, Tharoor, a seasoned diplomat and politician, believes that Trump’s statement is deeply flawed and overlooks the complex dynamics of the India-Pakistan conflict. In a series of tweets, Tharoor outlined his reasons for finding Trump’s statement “disappointing”.
Firstly, Tharoor pointed out that Trump’s statement implies a “false equivalence” between the victim and the perpetrator. “Pakistan has been waging a proxy war against India, sponsoring terrorism and violence in Jammu and Kashmir, and yet Trump’s statement makes no distinction between the two countries,” Tharoor tweeted. “This is a classic example of moral equivalence, which is unacceptable.”
Secondly, Tharoor argued that Pakistan has not earned the right to be included in any negotiating framework. “Pakistan has not taken concrete steps to dismantle its terror infrastructure, nor has it stopped supporting terrorists operating on Indian soil,” Tharoor tweeted. “To offer it a negotiating framework is to reward bad behaviour and undermine the very fabric of international relations.”
Thirdly, Tharoor claimed that Trump’s statement “internationalises” the Kashmir dispute, which is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. “The Kashmir dispute is a matter between India and Pakistan, and it is not for the United States or any other country to dictate a solution,” Tharoor tweeted. “By internationalising the issue, Trump is only serving to further complicate an already complex situation.”
Lastly, Tharoor argued that Trump’s statement “re-hyphenates” India and Pakistan, implying that the two countries are still inseparable entities. “India and Pakistan have moved on from being ‘India-Pakistan’ to being two separate, independent nations with their own distinct identities,” Tharoor tweeted. “To suggest that they are still ‘hyphenated’ is to deny the progress that has been made and to undermine India’s sovereignty.”
Tharoor’s scathing critique of Trump’s statement has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many taking sides on the issue. While some have praised Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire, others have echoed Tharoor’s concerns about the statement’s implications.
As news of the tweet spreads, it is clear that Trump’s statement has sparked a significant amount of controversy and debate. Whether or not his efforts will be successful in bringing about a ceasefire remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – Shashi Tharoor’s tweet has set the tone for a lively and nuanced discussion on the issue.
