Shashi Tharoor Shares 4 Reasons Why Trump’s Ceasefire Post on India & Pak was ‘Disappointing’
United States President Donald Trump’s recent tweet calling for a ceasefire between India and Pakistan has sparked a heated debate, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts on the matter. One such individual is Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who has expressed his disappointment with Trump’s post and shared four reasons why it is so.
Taking to Twitter, Tharoor shared a detailed explanation of why he finds Trump’s call for a ceasefire “disappointing”. According to Tharoor, Trump’s tweet implies a “false equivalence” between the victim and the perpetrator. He claims that by doing so, Trump is essentially suggesting that India and Pakistan are equally responsible for the current tensions between the two countries.
Tharoor further asserts that Trump’s tweet offers Pakistan a negotiating framework which it hasn’t earned. He claims that Pakistan has a history of supporting and sponsoring terrorism in India, and therefore, it is not deserving of being given a platform to negotiate with India. Instead, Tharoor believes that Pakistan should be held accountable for its actions and made to take concrete steps to dismantle terrorist infrastructure before any meaningful dialogue can take place.
The third reason Tharoor cites for his disappointment with Trump’s tweet is that it “internationalises” the Kashmir dispute. According to Tharoor, the Kashmir issue is a bilateral dispute between India and Pakistan, and it is not for other countries like the United States to intervene in. He believes that Trump’s tweet has set a dangerous precedent by implying that the United States has the authority to dictate the terms of the dispute.
The fourth and final reason Tharoor gives for his disappointment is that Trump’s tweet “re-hyphenates” India and Pakistan. Tharoor claims that India and Pakistan are two distinct nations with their own unique histories, cultures, and national interests. By calling for a ceasefire, Trump is essentially implying that India and Pakistan are still “one entity” and that their relationship is still tied by a single thread. Tharoor believes that this is a regressive approach to international relations and that it ignores the significant progress that has been made in India’s relations with other countries in recent years.
Tharoor’s tweet has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many people weighing in with their thoughts on the matter. While some have praised Trump’s efforts to broker peace between India and Pakistan, others have criticized him for intervening in a bilateral dispute. As the debate continues to rage on, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days and weeks.
