Mufti Alleges Foul Play After OGW Jumps in J&K River, Drowns; BJP Slams Her
In a shocking incident, an Over Ground Worker (OGW) jumped into the river in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir and drowned, prompting former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to accuse foul play. Mufti’s allegations have been vehemently denied by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a senior party leader hitting back at her over her comments.
According to reports, the OGW, identified as a local resident, jumped into the river in the early hours of Tuesday morning and failed to resurface. The police were alerted, and a search operation was launched to locate the body. It was recovered later in the day, and an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mufti, who is the president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), raised suspicions about the incident, suggesting that the OGW may have been picked up by the Army two days ago. “Locals have told me that he was picked up by the Army two days ago,” she tweeted. “Now he is found dead in the river. I smell foul play.”
However, the BJP has strongly rejected Mufti’s allegations, with senior leader Sanju Verma saying that the former Chief Minister’s comments were “absurd” and “unfortunate”. “Mehbooba, after the Pahalgam terror attack, said, ‘Why blame Pakistan?'” Verma tweeted. “Now, after an OGW drowns in a river, she’s crying foul play. Her credibility has been shot to pieces.”
The BJP leader’s sharp words are a reflection of the deep-seated distrust between the two parties, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing political turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir. The region has been under the grip of a strict security lockdown since the Centre revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to the state, in August 2019.
The OGW’s death has raised questions about the security situation in the region, with many locals expressing concerns about the increasing number of incidents involving suspected militants. The incident has also put a spotlight on the ongoing efforts of the security forces to tackle militancy in the region.
Mufti’s allegations have been met with skepticism by many, who point out that the OGW’s death appears to be a tragic accident rather than a case of foul play. The police have not yet commented on the incident, but sources say that the investigation is ongoing and all possible angles are being explored.
In the meantime, the BJP has sought to capitalize on Mufti’s comments, with party leaders pointing out that her allegations are a classic case of “blame game” and “scapegoating”. “Mehbooba Mufti’s credibility has been shot to pieces,” Verma said. “She has no moral right to question the security forces or make allegations of foul play.”
The incident has once again highlighted the deep divide between the two parties, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing political tensions in Jammu and Kashmir. As the investigation into the OGW’s death continues, it remains to be seen whether Mufti’s allegations will be proven or whether they will be dismissed as baseless speculation.
