J&K CM Omar meets PM Modi for first time after Pahalgam attack
In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Saturday, marking his first meeting with the Prime Minister since the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed the lives of at least 26 tourists.
The meeting, which reportedly lasted for around 30 minutes, was seen as a critical step towards strengthening the Centre-State ties and addressing the concerns of the Jammu and Kashmir administration in the wake of the devastating terror attack.
The Pahalgam terror attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, was a brutal and senseless act of violence that left the nation in shock. The attack, which was carried out by terrorists who stormed a tourist bus in Pahalgam, killed 26 people, including 18 women and 2 children, and left many more injured.
In the aftermath of the attack, there were concerns about the security arrangements in the state and the Centre’s preparedness to tackle the growing threat of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting between Omar Abdullah and PM Modi, therefore, took on added significance, with expectations running high that the two leaders would discuss the measures being taken to prevent such attacks in the future.
Sources close to the development revealed that the meeting was a productive one, with both leaders discussing the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the steps being taken to boost the security infrastructure in the state.
“We discussed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the measures being taken to prevent such attacks in the future,” Omar Abdullah told reporters after the meeting. “We also discussed the need for greater coordination between the Centre and the State to tackle the threat of terrorism.”
PM Modi, too, echoed similar sentiments, saying that the meeting was an opportunity to discuss the security concerns in Jammu and Kashmir and to strengthen the Centre-State ties.
“We had a productive meeting with the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah,” PM Modi said. “We discussed the security situation in the state and the measures being taken to prevent such attacks in the future. We also discussed the need for greater coordination between the Centre and the State to tackle the threat of terrorism.”
The meeting assumes added significance in the context of the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, with the latter being accused of supporting and sponsoring terrorist groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
In recent months, there have been several instances of cross-border firing and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), with both sides trading blame for the escalation of tensions.
The Pahalgam terror attack, however, has brought into sharp focus the need for greater security coordination and cooperation between the Centre and the State to tackle the threat of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
In this context, the meeting between Omar Abdullah and PM Modi is seen as a critical step towards strengthening the Centre-State ties and addressing the concerns of the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the meeting between Omar Abdullah and PM Modi may be seen as a small step towards healing the wounds and moving forward.
However, it is also important to acknowledge that the road to recovery will be long and arduous, and will require sustained efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure that such attacks do not happen again.
In the meantime, the nation can only hope that the meeting between Omar Abdullah and PM Modi will mark the beginning of a new era of cooperation and coordination between the Centre and the State to tackle the threat of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
