3 new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’ to be set up in India
In a significant move to promote traditional Indian systems of medicine, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Union Budget 2026 that three new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’ will be set up in India. This announcement is expected to give a major boost to the development of Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine that has been a cornerstone of Indian healthcare for centuries.
The setting up of these new institutes is part of the government’s efforts to promote Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine, such as Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, which are collectively known as AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy). The government has been actively promoting AYUSH systems of medicine in recent years, recognizing their potential to provide affordable and effective healthcare to the masses.
The three new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’ will be set up in different parts of the country, although the exact locations have not been specified yet. These institutes will be modeled on the lines of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi, which was set up in 2016 as a premier institute for Ayurveda education, research, and patient care. The AIIA has been a major success, attracting students and patients from all over the country and providing a platform for the development of Ayurveda.
The new institutes will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Ayurveda, as well as provide training in yoga, naturopathy, and other allied disciplines. They will also have state-of-the-art hospitals and research facilities, where patients can receive treatment and scientists can conduct research on various aspects of Ayurveda. The institutes will also collaborate with other institutions and organizations, both within the country and abroad, to promote the development of Ayurveda and other AYUSH systems of medicine.
In addition to the setting up of the new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’, the Union Finance Minister also announced that 1.5 lakh caregivers will be trained on “core care and allied skills, such as wellness, yoga and operation of medical and assistive devices.” This move is expected to address the shortage of skilled caregivers in the country, particularly in the healthcare sector. The training program will equip caregivers with the necessary skills to provide high-quality care to patients, including those with chronic diseases and disabilities.
The minister also announced the upgrading of AYUSH pharmacies, which will provide access to high-quality Ayurvedic and other AYUSH medicines to patients. The upgrading of these pharmacies will involve the modernization of infrastructure, the introduction of new technologies, and the training of pharmacists and other staff. This move is expected to promote the use of Ayurvedic and other AYUSH medicines, which are often more affordable and effective than conventional medicines.
The announcements made by the Union Finance Minister are a significant step forward in the development of Ayurveda and other AYUSH systems of medicine in India. They reflect the government’s commitment to promoting traditional Indian systems of medicine and providing affordable and effective healthcare to the masses. The setting up of the new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’, the training of caregivers, and the upgrading of AYUSH pharmacies are all expected to have a major impact on the healthcare sector in the country, particularly in the rural and underserved areas.
The promotion of Ayurveda and other AYUSH systems of medicine is also expected to have a positive impact on the economy, particularly in terms of employment and income generation. The AYUSH sector is a significant employer, with thousands of people working in various capacities, including as practitioners, teachers, researchers, and manufacturers. The growth of the AYUSH sector is also expected to attract investment, both from within the country and abroad, which will help to stimulate economic growth and development.
In conclusion, the announcements made by the Union Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2026 are a significant step forward in the development of Ayurveda and other AYUSH systems of medicine in India. The setting up of the new ‘All India Institutes of Ayurveda’, the training of caregivers, and the upgrading of AYUSH pharmacies are all expected to have a major impact on the healthcare sector in the country, particularly in the rural and underserved areas.
